"Uncle" Otto Gerlach was a craftsman of wide experience in watch and jewelry repair. He learned his art under an apprenticeship in his native Halle, Germany before coming to the United States in 1925. His first job in the U.S. was for the Gruen Watch company in Cincinnati. He then moved to Madison in 1936 and opened his doors at Gerlach's Jewelers to the people of Madison. After his death the store then was passed along to Winthrop Fielding, a cherished member of the Madison Community. Gerlach's was run by Winthrop and his two sons Bruce and Glen. Bruce and Glen purchased Gerlach's from Winthrop after years of working together. While Winthrop remained working with his two sons Bruce began his focuses on Gemology and received his Graduate Gemology degree from the Gemological Institute of America. He then received his Certified Gemologist Appraiser degree from the American Gem Society. Dr. Glen Fielding has been head of Gerlach's Expert Repair Division since the start of his ownership of Gerlach's Jewelers. In recent years, Bruce and Glen Fielding's children have stepped in as the fourth generation at Gerlach's. Derek has attended Studio Jewelers Repair School to do all the repairs at Gerlach's in-store. Our family is here as someone you can trust and serve you with all of your jewelry needs.
